What's the Key to Healthy Aging? | Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc.
The team at Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc. wants you to know that even though you’re a nurse and regularly spend time caring for others, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take time to also care for yourself.
Therefore, in recognition of Healthy Aging Month this September, take the time to help both you and your patients age as gracefully as possible.
How to Stay Healthy as You Age
First, it’s important to know where your numbers stand. And while you know how your patient is doing with his or her important health numbers, when was the last time you had a wellness check? Too often, caregivers put their own health and needs last. But this month, it’s time to put your needs on the priority list, too.
Second, you want to focus on your heart health. Did you know that one in three people living in the United States has high blood pressure? Take time to care for your heart by getting regular exercise, eating a balanced, healthy diet, limiting alcohol consumption, not smoking, and getting plenty of sleep. And you can throw in some heart-healthy dark chocolate when you get a craving!
Finally, do what you can to prevent falls. While this mostly relates to your patients, anyone can be at risk of falling. It’s particularly common in older adults. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four American adults age 65 or older experience a fall each year. Fall prevention doesn’t have to be difficult. There are a few key ways to limit the riskāhave regular vision and medical checkups to gauge health status and medication side effects, exercise regularly and include balance exercises specifically, and keep an eye out for fall hazards, like loose rugs or hanging cords.
