Take Time for Yourself
It can be easy to get lost in taking care of others and forget that we need to also be sure to take care of ourselves. This year, make it a point to make some time for yourself so that you can be sure that your emotional and physical health is the best it can be for you, your family, and your patients.
You Are Important
Even when taking off for a flight, and the flight attendant is giving the safety instructions, they say, “Put your oxygen mask on before you help someone else.” This rings true in our day-to-day lives as well. In order to take care of other people, we have to take care of ourselves.
One of the first things you can do for yourself is to make sure you obtain an adequate amount of sleep each night. You should try to get at least 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep each night. Turn off the television and cell phone, if possible, and just relax. Sleep deprivation is harmful to your health, as it can cause high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease. Do what you can to be sure you do not become a victim.
You also want to be sure that you are constantly drinking water. First, water helps ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day. However, a second benefit is water also helps with your metabolic rate. So, all that walking around each day will only act as a partner to increase the calories burned if you have your water bottle in hand also.
In addition, physical activity is a must. While you may think that walking around and taking care of patients is exercise enough, it is beneficial to also add some physical activity that you enjoy, such as swimming, Pilates, Yoga, running, etc. While the walking each day is great, utilizing exercise to de-stress is even better for your health!
