Take Action Against Heat Exhaustion | Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc

While you might be scheduled as a nurse on certain days, being a nurse really never ends. Even when your shift is over or you take a vacation, you might still always have on your nursing cap, which is why when you see someone having a health issue, you want to help.

Our team at Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc. wants to offer you tips on how to recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion and how you can help your loved ones take action this summer to prevent it from occurring.

Prevent Heat Exhaustion This Summer

As with anything, prevention is key. Therefore, it is important to do what you can in order to prevent heat exhaustion.

For starters, do not leave any children or pets in a parked car—period. Even if you are just running in the store to get one item, it doesn’t take long for a car to heat up and cause dangerous conditions to anyone left inside. Therefore, play it safe by bringing everyone in the store with you or running errands when you have free time alone.

Second, you want to make sure that you and your loved ones are staying hydrated throughout the day. This is especially important for kids and older adults, whose bodies can’t handle the heat as effectively.

While water is best for staying hydrated, a sports drink here and there can give your body the added electrolytes it needs. Look for varieties that are labeled as light or no-calorie to avoid unnecessary sugar intake.

Finally, try to keep your cool when out in the summer sun by seeking shade whenever possible and staying indoors between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.

Recognize the Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion

The following are signs of heat exhaustion. If you begin experiencing one of more of these symptoms, get out of the sun and into a cool spot.

  • Cool, clammy skin
  • Flushed skin
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

The key is to cool your body down when trying to prevent heat exhaustion. Therefore, get inside, sip on cool water and take it easy the rest of the day.
