Improve Your Bedside Manner
As a nurse, what seems like a million things are thrown at you each and every day. Once you get through a pile of paperwork, another pile of paperwork seems to be waiting. But the most important thing awaiting us day in and day out is our patients. And while we may be having a rough day at work or maybe in our personal lives, it is important for us to put that to the side in order to better care for our patients. One way we do this is through our bedside manner.
Develop A Good Bedside Manner
There are a number of ways you can help improve your bedside manner in order to better care for and treat your patients.
The first thing is to focus. No matter what else is going on, block it all out, and listen carefully to every little thing your patient is saying. Some medical issues, such as hemorrhoids, can be embarrassing to a patient. Therefore, it is important for us to have our minds clear in order to take in everything our patient is saying, even if they are speaking quietly about any medical problems that may be bothering them. This will allow for the best—and most effective—treatment plan to be put in place.
Make sure no one else is around the patient that is not supposed to be so that any and all information is kept confidential. Taking the extra step to ensure a patient’s privacy will also help them to be more open with you as they will trust that you are there to help them.
Most importantly, do not judge your patient or what they are going through. In order for them to also trust, they need to feel as though you are not looking down on them. You need to make them feel as comfortable as possible. How would you want a health care professional to treat your loved one? That is what you need to keep in mind when caring for your patients.
