How to Transition From Nursing Student to Nurse | Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc.
Our team at Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc. wants to congratulate you on making it through nursing school. What an amazing achievement! 🎉
And now that it’s time to get prepared for entering the workforce, our team of nurses wants to offer some advice on how you can make the transition as smooth as possible.
Surviving Your First Year
When you enter any job field, including one in the healthcare industry, your first year is always one of the hardest.
Between not knowing what to expect, learning the ropes of the nursing shift and establishing a personal and professional schedule, there are a lot of learning curves that can come when beginning your first nursing job.
Let’s take a look at some helpful tips for making the transition smooth:
Find Someone to Lean On
Whether it’s someone you already know or a colleague you feel an instant connection with when you first start your career, it’s important to find a mentor who can help you along the way.
Your mentor is someone who you can go to for career advice, as well as how to handle certain work situations and difficult patients.
Get Comfortable Asking Questions
Asking questions is how you are going to be able to learn your position, as well as how things work at your job. Don’t be afraid to ask any and all questions you have of a colleague or your leader.
Never be scared that you are going to ask a stupid question. The only stupid question is the one that you don’t ever ask—remember that!
Especially in a new position, it is already anticipated that you are going to be asking a lot of questions. Therefore, ask away! The more you ask, the more you learn—and the more informed nurse you will be.
Enjoy Being a Part of the Team
Embrace your new role as a full-time nurse by having fun and being a team player.
Just because you’re new to the team, doesn’t mean you can’t be someone your colleagues can count on. When you can, collaborate with your nursing peers on how to better care for patients, as well as offer to help when you can.
