How to Handle Working During the Holidays | Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc.
The weather hasn’t really cooled down enough yet for us to really start focusing on the holiday season ahead, but we’re almost there! And our team at Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc. wants to offer some tips on how to handle working during the holidays.
Nursing Never Ends
Since illnesses and injuries never take a break, neither do nurses. However, while we love our patients, it’s only normal to miss our families, especially during the holidays.
Fortunately, the nursing profession is like its own family. Together, we can take steps to better handle working over the holiday season.
For starters, go ahead and start planning your holiday schedule. Pretty soon, the shifts during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s will be known. If you are one of the many working the holiday, try to talk with family about plans to celebrate on another day.
Remember, while it would be nice to celebrate the holiday on the actual day, it isn’t really necessary, since the main point of the holiday season is to spend quality time together. Therefore, as soon as you know your schedule, plan the holiday festivities on a day where you—and everyone else —can celebrate, too!
Second, make it a holiday celebration with your work family! We’re all in the same boat. Other medical providers and patients will be missing out on time with their families during the holidays, so why not celebrate together? Plan a potluck meal where everyone brings their favorite holiday dish. That way you’re able to get a taste of other people’s traditions. You can even host a “Secret Santa” for those scheduled to work so that you can do some gift-giving among coworkers.
Finally, focus on your patients during that time. Although you are missing your family, many patients are also missing theirs. What can you do to enrich their experience? After all, isn’t that what nursing is all about?
