Help Your Patients Through the Holidays

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Well, for most, this is true. Unfortunately for some, the holidays bring more tears than cheer because their health is not where they wish it could be in order to better celebrate the holidays.

Be Your Patients’ Cheer

While you may not be able to take away all of their pain this holiday, there are things you can do to help make them see a reason to celebrate this season.

First, let your patient be the decision maker when it comes to the holidays. Do not force anything upon them. While some patients want to be a part of every holiday festivity, others may want to take the time to be alone or not attend as many of the events—and that is OK. The key is not to be pushy, and let the patient take the lead in what they do and do not want to participate in when it comes to the holidays.

While it is important to plan any activities, especially if treatments are involved or needed at certain times, make sure the patient knows it’s OK if they need/want to end up canceling their holiday plans—even if it is last minute. Also, make sure family and friends know this might occur as well, so they don’t let any frustration they might have over last-minute cancelations affect the patient in a negative way. You never know how a medical treatment might go that day. The last thing the patient needs is more guilt.
