One of the main things that leads us into a nursing career as a RN, LPN or CNA is our passion to help people during their time of need. While delivering medicine, checking vitals and administering IVs are all in a day’s work, the most important role you play is being someone patients can lean on. Therefore, it’s important to be able to relate to your patients on a more human level.

For starters, get to know your patients. What are their likes and dislikes? Do a little research to see what their hobbies were before getting sick. What did they enjoy doing in their free time? By knowing this information, you can help put smiles on their faces by helping them do what they once enjoyed.

Also, remember how good it feels hearing a compliment from a loved one or even a stranger sometimes? The same holds true for your patients. Does their coloring look better today? Perhaps they tried on a new outfit, or your pediatric patient received a new pajama set! There’s always an opportunity to pay someone a compliment.

In addition, a conversation can go a long way in making a person smile. Just taking the time to sit around and have small talk with a cup of coffee can help your patients feel more like themselves again. It doesn’t even have to be a serious conversation either. Talk about the weather, or discuss a new movie that is about to come out on television that they have been wanting to see. The most important thing to them is the giving of your time, which is sure to put smiles on their faces immediately!
