Fending Off the Winter Blues | Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc.

Let’s face it—when it’s cold outside and rainy or dreary, it’s harder to stay in a good mood. That’s why the phrase “winter blues” came to be.

But starting off the season with a positive mindset and some tips for survival can help you stay in a good place this winter. Our team at Health Care Staffing of Tennessee, Inc. wants to offer a few suggestions to help:

Get More Exercise

Getting regular exercise is one of the best ways to maintain positive mental health. When we exercise, the body is flooded with endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that just make us feel better about life.

Exercise also has been shown to help minimize the negative effects of stress and has many, many physical benefits.

So prioritize workouts even during the middle of the holiday season! Aim to get at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week, doing whatever you can to keep your body moving.

Head Outdoors

In the winter, thanks to the end of Daylight Saving Time, the days get shorter and darkness appears earlier. For most of us, that means we’re stuck inside working while the sun is out.

If possible, try to use lunch and other work breaks to get outside and take a walk around the block. Or, better yet, try eating lunch outside if the weather is decent. Even a little bit of sunshine is better than none at all.

However, if you are unable to get outside, try positioning yourself near the windows when possible and keeping the blinds open. The sun’s rays and natural light peeking in the window will help boost your mood.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

You know all about the importance of a healthy diet. But have you considered how fueling your body with healthy, balanced foods helps your mood?

Think about it—comfort food sounds amazing and tastes amazing, but do you find yourself feeling less than your best after you eat heavy, rich foods?

Fill your plate with fruits, veggies, lean proteins and whole grains, and limit excess sodium and added sugar. You’ll find your physical and mental health are in a better place!
