Defining your values is key to finding “work-life balance”
As the American workday lengthens and we continue to adopt technology and devices that allow our jobs to find their way into our homes, we’re hearing more and more about the issue of “work-life balance.” For nurses and other medical professionals who often work demanding schedules, the idea of this balance might seem like a myth.
Enforcing boundaries between your job and your home life may be difficult, but keeping this one philosophy in mind might just preserve your sanity: set priorities in both work and life._ _
Much of achieving this so-called “balance” has to do with simply making your work align with your personal goals and values. If caring for others is important to you, choosing a profession in the medical field is a great first step. No matter how hurried your life may be in this industry, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making others’ lives better on a daily basis.
However, you also have to understand what makes life worth living outside of work. Spending time with family, getting out into nature, taking in arts and culture—these are all activities that define and renew you, and establishing their importance is critical. Make time for all of these activities, and be as protective of this time as you can.
